This articthat, when used in combination, is an almost sure way to achieve your goals.
Achieving goals is not a matter of “discipline”. It is a matter of self-motivation, and keeping your focus on your goal. Follow these tips, any combination of them that works for you, and you should have the motivation and focus you need.
Here is:
1. Chart Your Progress. I recently posted about how I created a chart to track my progress for each of my goals. This chart is not just for information, so I can look back and see how I am doing. It is an encouragement to keep up with the list of tips and tricks for my goals. If I diligently check my chart daily, and mark the dots or “x”, then I will want to make sure I fill it in with dots. I thought to myself, "I'd better do this today if I wanted to mark the dot." Yes, that's a small incentive, but it helps, I hope. Some people prefer to use gold stars. Others have a training log, which also works. Or try Joe's goals. Still you do, follow your progress, and allow yourself to be proud each time you give yourself a positive signal.
Now, you will have bad marks on your chart. All right. Don't let a few bad marks stop you from progressing. Strive for good marks in the future.
2. Hold on. When I start with a new exercise program, any new goal actually, I fail to walk. I am full of joy, and my enthusiasm is endless. And my sense of self-worth does not exist. I think I can do anything. It wasn't long before I realized that I had limitations, and my enthusiasm began to wane.
Yeah Al that sounds pretty crap to me, Looks like BT aint for me either, Looks like BT aint for me either. Do not allow yourself to do whatever you want. Only allow yourself to do 50-75 percent of what you want to do. Also plan a course of action as you grow slowly over time. For example, if I want to run, I might think I could run 3 miles at first. But instead of letting myself do that, I just started running the mile. If I did that, I would be telling myself I could do more! But I do not allow myself. After this exercise, I will be looking forward to the next exercise, where I will allow myself to do 1.5 miles. I keep that re-energized power, tying it up, so I can carry it forward.
3. Join an online group (or offline) to help keep you focused and motivated. When I first started running, over the last year, I joined a few different forums, at different times, on different sites, such as Men's Health (Belly-Off Runner's Club), World Runner's, Cool Running, and a running team on About.com. I did the same when I quit smoking.
Each time I joined a forum, it helped to keep me on the right track. Not only did I meet a lot of other people who were going through what I was going through or who were already past it, I was going to report my progress (and failures) as I went along. They were there to get good advice, moral support, to help me keep going when I wanted to quit.
4. Post a picture of your goal somewhere visible - near your desk or refrigerator, for example. Visualizing your goal, what you think it will be like when you have achieved it, whether it be financial goals such as going to Rome or building a dream house, or physical goals such as running a race or getting a flat stomach, is a good motivator and one of the best ways to achieve your goals.
Find a photo of a magazine or photo online and send it to another place where you can see it every day, but an hour if possible. Set it as your desktop image, or your home page. Use the power of your visual perception to keep you focused on your goal. Because that focus is what will keep you motivated in the long run - once you lose focus, you lose motivation, so having something to keep you focused on your goal will help keep that motivation.
- 5. Find an exercise partner or goal scorer. Staying committed to yourself is hard. But if you find someone with similar goals (running, starvation, finances, etc.), see if he or she would like to work with you. Or work with your spouse, sister, or best friend in whatever goals they are trying to achieve. You do not have to follow the same goals - as long as you both push and shove and encourage each other to succeed.
6. Just get started. There are some days when you may feel out the door to run, or to get your budget, whatever you have to do that day for your own purpose. Yes, instead of thinking about how difficult it is and how long it will take, tell yourself that you should start over.
I have a rule (not the original) that I have to put on my running shoes and close the door behind me. After that, everything goes naturally. It’s when you’re sitting in your house, thinking of running and feeling tired, when it seems hard. Once you start, it has never been as difficult as you thought it would be. This tip always works for me.
